Once upon a time, contact lenses were heavy, awkward pieces of glass designed to be shoved into the eye. It scratched eyes, caused headaches, frequently broke, and used to fall out.
But since that time technology has come a long way, and nowadays there are numerous types of contact lenses, all designed for various aims and much more convenient than their cumbersome relatives.
Among many other benefits, contact lenses provide clear colors and sharp definition. Yes, contact lens are only prone to getting dry, but a drop or two of saline can take care of that. Furthermore, years ago had to keep a pair of lenses until the doctor changed their prescription, because they were so expensive, nowadays there are soft lenses made of a special plastic. Moreover, there is a wide variety of cheap contact lenses, and this makes them easily replaceable and extremely affordable.
There are even colored contact lenses! They give an opportunity to change eye color, which a lot of people would like to do. Brown, grey, amber, light green, dark green, purple, light blue, dark blue, violet and even red - practically every color you can imagine.
Novelty contact lenses are common in some scenes and cultures. A person, who actually needs contact lenses to see, should not try to use the novelty ones. Some of them are so dark that it is almost impossible to see out of them. But the colored lenses are just as translucent as clear ones.
Nowadays, even people who need bifocals can find the appropriate contact lenses. Glasses are almost becoming obsolete, between contacts and laser eye surgery.
